Anna & Michael’s London Zoo & Heddon Street Kitchen Winter Wedding

By julietlemon February 9 2017 - 05.38 AM

It is so exciting to start off 2017 with this super wedding which was set right in the heart of London! Welcome to the stunning wedding of the absolutely delightful Anna and Michael who got married a few days into the New Year.  They are such a fun, creative and energetic couple and it was truly an honour to photograph their day.  I really hope that you enjoy looking through their photos and reading about their big day…

Anna and her girls started off their day at The Royal Horseguards Hotel and when I joined them hair and makeup were in full swing; rollers, bobby pins, lippy and perfume all being put to good use. Champagne was flowing and even though there was much excitement in the air with double -tights action going on, Nutella avoidance and aisle-walking practice, Anna was so chilled out and giggling away which was wonderful to see.

The arrival of the flowers was a big moment. The bouquets had been carefully and lovingly created by the floral whizz Jo from Jo Wilkinson Floristry, who also happened to be a very dear friend of Anna and her Bridesmaid.  All the very early morning hard work had resulted in stunning floral masterpieces.  The flowers smelled delightfully fresh and the display of vibrant colours featured a nod to Oz alongside some English flowers. Jo summed it up eloquently, “I wanted to capture Anna’s warm, flamboyant, beautiful, and funky personality. I also wanted to capture the two countries within the flowers. Michael loved the ‘wild look’ rose, which I thought was quite fitting as they were getting married at ZSL London Zoo. So that was  my inspiration to use a variety of pink, peach and orange colours . Roses are a very English flower, so that was perfect to reflect Michael. I then chose other roses in a bright pink  as it reminds me of Anna’s epic collection of lipsticks. Then gerberas as they are bold and eye catching – like Anna. Finally Kangaroo Paw and Eucalyptus added to the Australian – ness of it all.”

I was able to capture the ‘getting ready’ action of the girls preening and last minute plans coming together as well as photographing some of the details of the day.  A lot of thought had been put into Anna’s ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue’ which included a her Grandmother’s vintage watch, Great-Grandmother’s bracelet and the same Parfum d’Hermes in a beautiful, old bottle which was  the scent that Anna’s Mum wore on her wedding day.

One of the many details of the day with which I absolutely fell in love, was the Bride’s Vivienne Westwood shoes – the so very fun nude ‘Lady Dragon with Cherub’ style!

Soon enough the time was approaching for the beautiful Bride to leave for the ceremony.  With the help of her Bridesmaids she put on her stunning Stella York wedding dress, her veil,  all of her accessories and she looked incredible!

Her father was waiting patiently downstairs in the lobby and it really was such an honour being there to photograph the first look he took of his beautiful daughter.  Anna and her father hugged for a long time and both did exceptionally well to hold back the tears, much to the relief of Victoria the makeup artist!

Being in London, naturally traditional London modes of transport were the order of the day!  The Bride and her entourage jumped into black cabs and were chauffeured to ZSL London Zoo where Michael, their family and friends were waiting.

The ceremony couldn’t have been held in a more appropriate place.  The elegant Grade II listed Mappin Pavilion overlooked the Australian outback enclosure with its kangaroos, emus and wallabies – a definite home from home for the Bride and her Aussie friends and relatives.

The Bride had arrived a little ahead of schedule so we made the most of the extra snippet of time in the warmth of the Komodo Dragon House where I was able to take some fun photos of Anna with her Dad and her beautiful bridesmaids.

2 o’clock soon arrived and the ceremony was to begin.  Thanks to his great Groomsmen, Michael was in the right place at the right time and didn’t seem too nervous.

Preceded by her 3 lovely Bridesmaids, Anna was walked up the aisle by her very proud father.  She wore  a beaming smile and looked resplendent as she slowly made her way to be by the side of the man who  was to become her husband.

The ceremony was lovely with some beautiful, thoughtful readings.  The ever so important job of ‘Ring Runners’ was bestowed upon Michael’s sisters, wearing the cutest ‘Pink Lady’ jackets, and they did a magnificent job of walking up the aisle to deliver them.

With the signing of the register completed the newlyweds made their way down the aisle to the applause and cheers of their family and friends .

The new Mr & Mrs were treated to a super ‘confetti moment’ by their guests with bubbles being used instead and there was some really impressive bubble-blowing action going on.  Tea and biscuits were enjoyed whilst everyone mingled, enjoying the Outback backdrop.

After taking the group shots, the bridal party went on a little walk around the zoo enabling me to capture some super photographs.  The rain had decided to join us at this stage so armed with brollies we headed over to the carousel, which was not only a great  spot for photos but also provided much needed shelter from the precipitation!

Oh we had so much enjoyment at the carousel! Immersed in vibrant colours and surrounded by crazy animals the couple had such fun and then were joined by their entourage.  It proved to the the perfect setting for a spot of ‘tiger-action’ too!

From ZSL London Zoo, keeping the London transport theme, everyone piled into a red Routemaster London bus where we were treated to a fun-filled ride.  Not only were we able to enjoy driving past the sights of London, (although it was quite dark by this time of day) and as well as a wine tasting session there was also an entertaining quiz about the couple, where the quiz masters had teams honking horns and shouting answers.  The Bride’s sister and her Fiancé had brought with them a superb selection of wine all the way from Australia and this went down very well.  Whilst the wedding guests were busy drinking the couple hopped off the bus at St. Paul’s Cathedral for a quick photo session.  Despite the rain and minimal light we got some super photos. Back on the bus with the alcohol flowing, together with much banter, spirits were certainly not dampened by the great British weather!

Regent Street was the final stop for the bus.  The guests headed straight to the venue whilst the couple popped into Hamleys, the world-famous toy shop, which is actually where Anna works.  There the newlyweds were greeted and congratulated by lots of staff as well as two Hamleys teddy bears.  It was such a fun and crazy moment, a gorgeous wedding couple, life-size teddy bears and tons of tourists surrounding them taking photos and selfies – only in London!

Before joining the reception I did get the couple to play with the traffic – yes, play with the traffic!  I got a few, really fun long-exposure photos of them together on the central reservation in  Regent Street which resulted in shots of them surrounded by the light trails of passing buses and cars.  Anna and Michael were such good sports and despite the rain and the nippy temperatures were totally up for it and I’m sure you’ll agree the end results were well worth it!

Gordon Ramsay’s Heddon Street Kitchen was the venue for the reception and it was beautifully decorated.  Ensuring the continuation of the super-fun London Outback theme and incorporating some of the playfulness from Hamleys there were kangaroo and pug dog balloons, teapots filled with flowers, quirky old-fashioned tea cups for the favours, and a games corner.

Keen to have the reception really chilled and informal, the couple had organised things perfectly.  They hadn’t opted for a formal sit-down meal with set table places, instead it was finger food and small plates and bowls of food.  With Heddon Street Kitchen being a brasserie run by Gordon Ramsay, it goes without saying that the food was exquisitely delicious and plentiful .

Cocktails, beer and wine flowed copiously and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the speeches with some really heart felt words being said.  I was delighted to see Anna take to the mic too.  I love it when my Brides do this!

The celebrating and partying carried on into the evening with lots of really brilliant tunes being played, naturally lots of Aussie ones, and some impressive shapes being thrown on the dance floor!

Anna & Michael, it really has been such a delight photographing your wedding day.  Your family and friends were such a blast on the day and I wish you two all the happiness, love and laughter in the world! x

A big SHOUT OUT to the wonderful wedding suppliers who work incredibly hard and wonderfully to make Anna & Michael’s day so brilliant!
