MARRIED…..Amy & David’s Art Deco Inspired London Wedding – Century Club, Shaftesbury Avenue

By julietlemon May 2 2018 - 12.56 PM

Welcome to Amy & David’s absolutely gorgeous art deco London wedding. You may recognise them from their recent engagement shoot blog post – a lovely American couple now getting married in London!  It was such a perfect day, set in the heart of our wonderful capital and I’m delighted to be sharing their beautiful wedding with you.

I spent the morning with Amy and her girls at the Waldorf Hilton situated on the Aldwych in the heart of London’s theatre district.  The getting ready process was all very calm and collected with the beautiful Bride-to-be having time to do her mum’s make up and also have a Skype chat with friends abroad.

As well as catching the girlies in action, I captured many of the beautiful details, the vintage gold hand bag, which I believe was a family heirloom, the bride’s perfume, her shoes, the lovely text messages on Amy’s phone sent over from America by well-wishers and of course the absolutely stunning flowers, which were made by the talented florist, Clare Marie Jones.  The colours and the intricate floral arrangements of each bouquet were absolutely exquisite and capturing the details with my 100mm macro lens was a real treat -a little bit of photography geek talk there for you!

As you can clearly see from the photos, Amy transformed into an absolutely stunning Bride and she radiated such elegance.  Photographing her putting the finishing touches of make up, applying the killer red lipstick with all the mirror reflections, I’m sure you’ll agree with me that the photos of her are just so classic and stunning and the lipstick enhanced her already million dollar smile!

Everything was running according to plan with the girls although Amy did receive a slightly alarming text message from her husband-to-be asking her for the contact details of their landlord.  Of course she provided the information and did suspect that there was a bit of an unplanned drama behind the request, but she wisely decided not to get flustered or worried about the boys and focus on getting ready and getting to the church on time, which she did.

We did later find out that whilst the girls were sipping their champagne from glasses decorated with gold sparkles (how brill are they?!?), the Groom had managed to lock himself out of their apartment!  With him locked out and his wedding clothes locked in and the ceremony pending, this clearly could have been a massive problem, however he fortunately did get hold of the landlord, who came to the rescue with a spare set of keys just in time……..PHEW!!!

Their ceremony was at  Holy Trinity Church in Sloane Square in Chelsea, where the Groom, family and guests were waiting in anticipation for the arrival of the Bride.  It was such a beautiful moment, escorted by her dad, Amy glided down the aisle to join her beaming Beau to be wedded.

As the newlyweds emerged from the church, the guests showered them with confetti and fortunately at this point, the rain shower that was happening during the service had cleared so we didn’t get soaked.

The whole wedding party boarded a big red London Bus, which took us to the reception venue.  The transport was much to the delight of many of the guests, almost all of whom had flown in from the States, and we were treated to a whistle-stop tour of the sights of London, crossing the River Thames twice, once over at Lambeth Bridge and the second time back over the River at Waterloo Bridge.  With iconic buildings like the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben and The London Eye the guests were in their element.

The bus journey was truly a wonderful part of the day.  With the guests and the couple all in one place together, they are able to jointly revel in the happiness, celebrations and singing (yup, they were a super fun bunch!) all together whilst sipping champagne out of cute plastic travel champagne flutes and being very careful not to spill as the bus was in motion!

When the bus arrived at the reception venue at The Century Club on Shaftesbury  Avenue, we left the guests to make their way in and get settled while the couple and I took a little walk to get some wonderful photos of them together.  We walked across the road to Chinatown in the glorious sunshine and had a little, super fun photo session.  It was such a wonderful juxtaposition, them in their wedding attire amongst the hustle and bustle of tourists, shop vendors and a hen do watched, congratulated and waved at the happy couple which of course provided lots of great photos!

With the photos done, I returned the couple to their guests, who greeted them with cheers and charged raised glasses.  The Century Club, a private members club was the perfect setting for the couple’s day.  Amy had added beautiful details to the room, art deco photo frames with lovely messages for the guests and cocktail recommendations, which the bar tender was delighted to conjure up, sparkly twizzle sticks to decorate the drinks and pretty black and white striped straws.  Another lovely touch was a Perrier Jouet bottle of Champagne to be signed by the guests so they could drink it and see the messages on their first wedding anniversary.  We were up on the roof terrace for the drinks reception, where the roof had been retracted, so it was a real treat being inside but having fresh air and bright sky above.  The exposed brickwork and indoor foliage really added a softness to the setting and with all the natural light coming in from the open roof it was perfect for the photos.

The wedding breakfast was held on another floor and the room looked amazing.  The tables laid perfectly and again, the details and decorations of the room really complimented and enhanced the art deco theme and style of their day.  The food was absolutely delicious and I have to say that it was the best wedding food I have ever had in my 7 years of doing wedding photography and I know all the guests were raving about it to, so ‘thank you’ Century Club chefs!!  Actually, everything about the Century Club was brilliant, all the staff were super friendly, helpful and fun and they really did help make the day.

The speeches followed the food and in line with the American tradition it was an ‘open mic’ for family and guests to share their lovely words, which was really touching including some from Grandad who shared lots of pears of wisdom.  The Groom said some incredible, heartfelt tear jerking words and he was followed by the best man, who was the Groom’s brother and they had everyone in hysterics.

With the speeches over, the dancing commenced with the couple having their first dance together and they were soon joined by everyone.  Country music was the soundtrack for the evening and it was such a giggle with the guests aninmatedly singing along to brilliant songs like ‘Rock me Mama like a wagon wheel‘ and busting out incredible dance moves and for many of the songs everyone getting involved in line dancing action > it was great and very impressive!!

Along with the dancing lots of drinking also went on and people were absolutely loving their drink recommendations which certainly kept the bartender busy!  The end to my evening was being invited to the bar for a celebratory round of gin shots (oh they know me so well!!) followed by a bit of a bop on the dance floor > perfect!!

Awwwwwww!  It has been a total treat getting to know and become good friends with Amy and David over the last few months.  They are such lovely, kind hearted people with an amazing network of friends and family that traveled so far to celebrate their marriage and it was a real honour and a privilege capturing that in the photographs.

Amy & David – thank you for having me photograph your stunning wedding and I wish you all the happiness, love and laughter of a lifetime x
