Peak Design #findyourpeak Field Note feature on my Tour de Tuli ride in Africa

By julietlemon July 11 2017 - 06.42 PM

This time last year I was setting off to sub-Saharan Africa with my tiger bike, Tony,  to ride in the annual Nedbank Tour de Tuli, a multi-stage mountain bike event.  This four day cycle ride covered 300 km across remote and challenging terrain in south-eastern Botswana, northern South Africa and south-western Zimbabwe.  Organised by Wilderness Safaris which raises money for Children in the Wilderness, a nonprofit that supports development of environmental and life skills for rural African youth as well as a variety of conservation projects.

Today I am so incredibly chuffed and honour to have my participation in the Tour de Tuli featured by Peak Design in one of their Field Notes.

I’ve popped a couple of photos on this post for you to enjoy and you can see the whole sparkly Peak Design feature HERE

To the Peak Design team – thank you ever so much for this feature and for all the gear I’ve absolutely LOVED using (and abusing – sorry!) so much.  From fast cars and endurance events around the globe to photographing fierce cats on safari in Africa to the wonderful world of weddings I always have your trusty gear on me and in full use.  You cool cats rock!

Before I go I’d like to say a big THANKS so the super people and companies that I am still eternally grateful for and all the support and help they gave me a year ago.  Without them there is absolutely no way I would have been able to do the ride…

The AMAZING Putney Cycles team and Tom at Calm and Ready.  Without them I would not have had my super- incredible Tony the Tiger bike!

Barry, Jon, Dai, Will and Chris at Putney Cycles, thank you for sorting out the wheels from Giant and thank you so very much for your time, advice and expert guidance for my Africa ride preparation.  Sharing essential riding tips and always helping me with such enthusiasm, even when I’m asking exceptionally dim questions.  Nothing was too much fuss or bother, even arranging for those two derailleur hangers to be at your shop for me to pick up en route to the airport. You guys are truly the best and if anyone is ever in need of a super bike shop in London, Putney Cycles is the place to go!!!

Tom at Calm and Ready transformed the Giant mountain bike into Tony the Tiger!  He spent hours painstakingly vinyl-wrapping my MTB in tiger print with the most incredible attention to detail.  Ensuring the stripes lined up whilst taking the intricate contours of the frame into consideration, right through to the shading of the range to make it look as realistic, as you can see from the photos Tom’s work was absolutely incredible.

Jack Wolfskin, thank you so much for the hydration pack which was essential for riding in the heat.  A winner of a trick I picked up there was filling the hydration pack with iced water.  Having that thirst-quenching elixir of chilled water to sip on whilst cycling was magically refreshing in the dry, dusty heat of the African bush.

A big and very well deserved shout-out to the super adventure photographers Caroline Culbert, Jacques Marais and Mike Southerland who captured so many wonderful photographs whilst we cyclists were peddling.

The amazing Wilderness Safaris team and all their volunteers whose tireless effort and hard work was nothing short of phenomenal.  The organisation and setup for the Tour was truly incredible and left the  cyclists wanting for nothing because absolutely everything was covered.

Finally, a big THANK YOU and WELL DONE  to Children in the Wilderness that does such superb work supporting the development of environmental and life skills for rural African youth.  I’ve had the honour of photographing a variety of conservation projects in Botswana and Malawi, so having seen and photographed their good work in action I can honestly say that it was such an privilege to participate in this event and for them.
