After photographing weddings for more than 18 years, I’ve learnt that the happiest wedding days aren’t the ones where everything goes perfectly. They’re the ones where couples feel relaxed, prepared and free to enjoy every moment as it unfolds.
I’ve photographed weddings in grand country houses, elegant city venues, cosy village churches and windswept coastal locations. Every celebration is different, yet the same pieces of advice come up time and time again because they genuinely make a difference.
These aren’t complicated wedding hacks or strict rules. They’re simple tips I’ve seen help hundreds of couples feel calmer, more present and able to soak up the joy of their day. My hope is that they’ll help you do exactly the same.
WHAT SHOULD YOU PLAY ON THE MORNING OF YOUR WEDDING?
The morning of your wedding sets the tone for everything that follows, and music is one of the easiest ways to create the atmosphere you want.
Rather than worrying about the final details, fill the room with songs that make you smile. Think favourite dance floor classics, throwback anthems, songs from your hen do or tunes that always get your friends singing along. Before long, the nerves start to disappear and the excitement takes over.
One piece of advice? Don’t make the playlist yourself.
Ask a bridesmaid, sibling or best friend to take charge. It’s one less thing for you to think about, and they’ll probably know exactly which songs will get everyone laughing.
A great playlist doesn’t just lift the mood. It creates lovely, natural moments that you’ll remember long after the wedding day. Friends dancing while hair is being curled, parents singing along, someone inevitably using a hairbrush as a microphone. Those little moments often become some of my favourite photographs because they capture the excitement exactly as it happened.
Ideas for your wedding morning playlist:
- Include songs that make you instantly smile.
- Mix classics with personal favourites.
- Add a few upbeat tracks to lift the energy.
- Let someone else create and manage the playlist.
- Press play and enjoy the morning without worrying about what’s next.

WHAT WEDDING JOBS SHOULD YOU DELEGATE BEFORE THE BIG DAY?
If I could give every couple one piece of practical advice before their wedding, it would be this.
Delegate.
So many couples spend the final days before the wedding trying to finish every last little job themselves. Favours need tying with ribbon, signage still needs collecting and somebody is hunting for the place cards. It can quickly become overwhelming.
The truth is that your family and friends usually want to help. Giving people small, clear jobs doesn’t just lighten your workload. It allows them to feel part of the excitement too.
Some couples even turn the final preparations into a relaxed evening together, with music playing, drinks flowing and everyone pitching in. It becomes another lovely memory before the wedding has even begun.
Some easy jobs to delegate include:
- Creating the getting-ready playlist.
- Finishing wedding favours.
- Collecting or delivering décor.
- Checking table plans and place settings.
- Looking after gifts and cards.
- Packing emergency kits.
- Coordinating small supplier questions on the day.
The more you can hand over before your wedding morning, the more headspace you’ll have for the moments that really matter. Instead of ticking off another job, you can spend that time with the people you’ve chosen to celebrate with, and that’s always time well spent.
WHAT IS THE BEST PLAN B FOR BRITISH WEDDING WEATHER?
If there’s one thing we can’t control on a wedding day, it’s the British weather. Sunshine, showers and even a surprise heatwave can all make an appearance, sometimes within the same afternoon. Rather than worrying about the forecast, I always encourage couples to have a simple Plan B in place.
Speak to your venue and suppliers before the day so everyone knows what happens if the weather changes. A little preparation means you can adapt quickly without it affecting the atmosphere or your enjoyment.
A few thoughtful touches can make a big difference:
- Biodegradable umbrellas for unexpected rain.
- Parasols or handheld fans for hot weather.
- Comfortable shoes for muddy or uneven ground.
- Water stations if temperatures are high.
- A flexible dress code if a heatwave is forecast.
One couple I photographed swapped a formal dress code for a relaxed beach-chic feel when the forecast changed. It was such a simple decision, but everyone stayed comfortable and enjoyed the celebration even more.
The weather doesn’t have to be perfect for your wedding to be wonderful. Some of the most memorable photographs I’ve taken have happened in conditions nobody expected.
WHY SHOULD YOU TRUST YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER WHEN THE LIGHT TURNS MAGICAL?
One of the biggest advantages of working with an experienced wedding photographer is that we’re always watching the light. Sometimes the most beautiful conditions appear when you least expect them, and they rarely arrive according to the wedding timeline.
It might happen during dessert, while guests are finding their seats for the wedding breakfast or just before the speeches begin. If I quietly suggest slipping outside for five minutes, there’s usually a very good reason.
Those few minutes can create some of the most beautiful photographs of the entire day, without taking you away from your guests for long. In fact, one of my favourite times for couple portraits is while everyone is settling into the reception. Guests are chatting, finding their tables and enjoying themselves, giving you a natural opportunity to step away together for a short breather.
The best photographs never come from standing still for an hour. They come from relaxed conversations, genuine laughter and simply enjoying a quiet moment together.
When the light becomes something special, trust your photographer. I’ll always make sure you’re back celebrating before most of your guests even realise you’ve been gone.

HOW CAN CONFETTI AND BUBBLES MAKE YOUR WEDDING PHOTOS EVEN BETTER?
Sometimes, it’s the simplest ideas that create the biggest smiles. Confetti and bubbles add movement, colour and excitement to your wedding day, turning an ordinary moment into one that’s full of energy and joy.
If your venue allows confetti, I always recommend choosing biodegradable petals. Larger petals tend to float for longer, creating a beautiful cloud of colour that photographs wonderfully. Before ordering, check your venue’s guidelines and don’t be afraid to buy a little more than you think you’ll need. A generous handful from each guest creates a much more spectacular effect than a tiny pinch.
If confetti isn’t an option, bubbles are a brilliant alternative. Bubble guns, bubble machines or even a few enthusiastic children armed with bubble wands can fill the air with playful movement, creating photographs that feel relaxed and full of life.
My favourite options include:
- Large biodegradable flower petals.
- Plenty of confetti for every guest.
- Bubble guns for the wedding party.
- Bubble machines during the drinks reception.
- Children leading the bubble fun.
Confetti and bubbles aren’t the only ways to create these moments, though. Interactive entertainment, such as a Boomerang Booth, encourages guests to laugh, let their guard down and make memories together throughout the evening. While I’m capturing the story of your wedding as it unfolds, your guests are busy creating joyful moments of their own, adding another fun layer to the celebrations.
The best photographs rarely come from perfectly posed moments. They come from genuine laughter, movement and the little bursts of happiness that nobody could have planned. Those are the moments I love preserving most.
HOW CAN YOU KEEP WEDDING GUESTS ENTERTAINED THROUGHOUT THE DAY?
One of the loveliest things about a wedding is watching different groups of people come together. Friends meet family for the first time, conversations begin over a glass of fizz and, before long, strangers are laughing together as though they’ve known each other for years.
Thoughtful entertainment helps those moments happen naturally. It isn’t about filling every minute of the day. It’s about creating opportunities for people to relax, interact and enjoy themselves while your celebration unfolds.
Some of my favourite ideas include:
- Live acoustic music during the drinks reception.
- Lawn games for outdoor weddings.
- A guest book with instant photo prints.
- A Boomerang Booth for fun, shareable moments.
- Sparklers or an evening send-off, where your venue allows.
As a documentary wedding photographer, I love entertainment that brings people together rather than pulling them away from the celebration. A Boomerang Booth is a brilliant example. While I’m capturing the big moments and the quiet in-between ones, your guests are busy making memories of their own. The laughter, silly poses and spontaneous reactions all become part of the story of your wedding day.

WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT WEDDING DAY ADVICE I CAN GIVE YOU?
After more than 18 years of photographing weddings, there’s one piece of advice I come back to again and again.
Be present.
You’ve spent months, and perhaps even years, planning your wedding. When the day finally arrives, allow yourself to enjoy it rather than worrying about whether everything is running perfectly. Trust the people you’ve chosen, let your suppliers do what they do best and accept that little surprises are simply part of every wedding story.
Something might run late. The weather might change. A button could come loose or a speech might go wonderfully off script. None of those moments will define your day.
What you’ll remember are the hugs that lasted a little longer than expected, the enormous laughs during the speeches, your grandparents holding hands, your best friend crying during the ceremony and the packed dance floor at the end of the night.
Those are the moments I look for with my camera.
Not because they’re perfect, but because they’re real.
Years from now, I don’t want your photographs to simply remind you what your wedding looked like. I want them to remind you exactly how it felt.
That’s the story worth remembering.

QUESTIONS COUPLES OFTEN ASK ME
After photographing weddings for more than 18 years, I’ve been asked just about every wedding question you can imagine. While every celebration is unique, these are some of the questions that come up most often. I hope the answers help you feel a little more prepared and a lot more excited for your own wedding day.
How can we make our wedding morning feel more relaxed?
Preparation is everything. Try to finish the last-minute jobs before the wedding morning, delegate anything that doesn’t need your attention and give yourselves more time than you think you’ll need. A relaxed playlist, plenty of refreshments and the people who make you feel most like yourself will help create a calm, happy atmosphere.
What happens if it rains on our wedding day?
We adapt.
Rain rarely ruins a wedding. It simply changes the plan. An experienced team will know how to make the most of whatever the weather brings, whether that’s finding beautiful indoor spaces, using umbrellas or making the most of a break in the clouds. Some of my favourite photographs have been taken on rainy wedding days.
What happens if there’s a heatwave on our wedding day?
Hot weather deserves just as much planning as rain. Make sure guests have access to water and shade, consider fans or parasols, and don’t be afraid to relax the dress code if temperatures are particularly high. Comfortable guests are happy guests.
When is golden hour for wedding photos?
Golden hour changes depending on the season, your venue and the weather, so there isn’t one fixed time. If I spot beautiful light and suggest slipping outside for five minutes, it’s because I know it could create some of your favourite photographs from the day.
How long should we allow for couple portraits?
Less time than most couples imagine.
I much prefer taking photographs in short pockets throughout the day rather than disappearing for an hour-long photoshoot. That way, you spend more time celebrating with your guests while still receiving a varied and beautiful wedding gallery.
Do we need to know how to pose?
Absolutely not.
Most of my couples have never been professionally photographed before. I’ll offer gentle guidance when needed, but my approach is always relaxed and natural. The best photographs happen when you’re chatting, laughing and simply enjoying being together.
What is the best confetti for wedding photos?
Large biodegradable petals usually create the most beautiful effect because they stay in the air for longer and show up wonderfully in photographs. Before buying anything, always check your venue’s confetti policy.
Are bubbles a good alternative to confetti?
Definitely.
If confetti isn’t allowed, bubbles create the same sense of movement and celebration. Bubble guns and bubble machines are especially effective, and they’re always popular with younger guests.
Should we leave our wedding breakfast for sunset photos?
If the light is particularly beautiful, I may suggest popping outside for five or ten minutes. You’ll be back before most guests even notice you’ve gone, and those few minutes can produce some truly special photographs.
READY TO PLAN YOUR WEDDING?
Whether you’re still choosing a venue or counting down the days until your wedding, I hope these tips have helped you feel a little more confident about what’s ahead.
My approach has always been simple. I want you to spend your wedding enjoying the people you love while I quietly capture the moments that make your celebration uniquely yours. The laughter, the happy tears, the dance floor chaos and everything in between all deserve to be remembered.
If you’re looking for a relaxed, documentary wedding photographer who’ll tell the story of your day naturally, I’d love to hear about your plans. Get in touch, and let’s start chatting about your wedding.
