Hi, I'm Juliet,

You focus on having fun, whilst I capture you at your best having an epic time with your friends and family.

Get to know me

Getting engaged is one of the most exciting chapters of your life.

Between choosing a venue, booking suppliers, finding the perfect outfit and planning all the details of your wedding day, there is certainly plenty to think about.

One thing many couples consider, but are not always sure about, is whether to have an engagement shoot.

As a wedding photographer with more than 18 years of experience, I can honestly say that engagement shoots are one of the best investments couples can make before their wedding day. Not only do they provide beautiful photographs to celebrate your engagement, but they also help you feel relaxed, confident and excited about being photographed before the big day arrives.

If you are wondering whether an engagement shoot is right for you, here is everything you need to know.

WHAT IS AN ENGAGEMENT SHOOT?

The months between getting engaged and saying “I do” often pass remarkably quickly. There is so much planning to enjoy that it can be easy to forget to pause and celebrate this exciting chapter together.

An engagement shoot creates that opportunity.

Sometimes called a pre wedding photoshoot, an engagement shoot takes place before your wedding day and focuses entirely on the two of you. There are no timelines to follow, no guests to entertain and no pressure to perform. Instead, you can simply enjoy spending time together whilst creating beautiful photographs that reflect your relationship.

As a London engagement photographer, I photograph couples everywhere from iconic city locations and beautiful parks to countryside settings and meaningful places that hold special memories. The location can be almost anywhere, which makes every session feel wonderfully personal.

WHY SHOULD YOU HAVE AN ENGAGEMENT SHOOT BEFORE YOUR WEDDING?

One of my favourite things about engagement shoots is seeing how much couples relax throughout the session. Almost everyone arrives feeling a little nervous at first. Many tell me they feel awkward in front of the camera or worry they will not know what to do.

However, those worries rarely last very long. As we chat, explore the location and settle into the session, confidence quickly starts to grow. Before long, couples stop thinking about the camera altogether and simply enjoy spending time together.

That confidence often becomes the biggest benefit of an engagement shoot. By the time your wedding day arrives, you already know what it feels like to be photographed professionally. You know how I work, what to expect and how relaxed the experience can be.

Alongside that confidence, engagement shoots offer several other wonderful benefits:

  • You become more comfortable in front of the camera.
  • You build trust with your photographer.
  • You discover what feels natural for you as a couple.
  • You create beautiful photographs before your wedding day.
  • You gain confidence ahead of one of the biggest days of your life.

You Get Comfortable in Front of the Camera

Most people do not spend their weekends having professional photographs taken. Therefore, it is completely normal to feel unsure beforehand.

The beauty of an engagement shoot is that there is no pressure. You do not need modelling experience, perfect poses or a carefully rehearsed smile. Instead, I guide you naturally and help you focus on enjoying the experience together.

You Build Trust With Your Photographer

Your wedding photographer will spend more time with you than almost any other supplier on your wedding day.

An engagement shoot gives us the chance to get to know each other before the celebrations begin. As a result, your wedding day feels more relaxed because you already have a familiar face by your side.

You Learn What Feels Most Natural

Every couple interacts differently. Some couples love walking photographs, while others enjoy quieter moments together. Engagement photography gives us the opportunity to discover what feels most comfortable and authentic for you.

You Receive Beautiful Photographs

Of course, the photographs themselves are a lovely bonus.

Many couples use their engagement photographs for:

  • Save the date cards
  • Wedding websites
  • Guest books
  • Framed artwork
  • Social media announcements
  • Wedding day displays

They also become a wonderful reminder of this exciting chapter before married life begins.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO HAVE AN ENGAGEMENT SHOOT?

One of the lovely things about engagement shoots is their flexibility. Unlike a wedding day, there is no schedule to work around, which means you can choose a time that suits you best.

I usually recommend booking your engagement shoot between three and twelve months before your wedding. This gives you plenty of time to enjoy the photographs and use them for wedding stationery if needed.

Each season brings something different to your images:

  • Spring offers blossom and fresh colours.
  • Summer provides long evenings and beautiful golden light.
  • Autumn brings rich tones and wonderful textures.
  • Winter creates an atmosphere and a cosy feel.

The best season is simply the one that feels right for you.

WHERE SHOULD YOU HAVE YOUR ENGAGEMENT SHOOT?

Choosing a location can feel like a big decision. However, the best engagement shoot locations are often the most meaningful ones.

Some couples choose places connected to their story. Others prefer somewhere beautiful where they can relax and enjoy the experience together.

Popular choices include:

The most important thing is choosing somewhere that feels like you. Personal locations often create the most meaningful photographs because they already hold memories before the session even begins.

WHAT SHOULD WE WEAR FOR AN ENGAGEMENT SHOOT?

This is easily one of the questions I get asked most often.

The good news is that there is no complicated formula. The best outfits are usually the ones that make you feel comfortable, confident and like yourselves.

I often suggest:

  • Choosing outfits that complement each other.
  • Wearing timeless or neutral colours.
  • Avoiding large logos and distracting patterns.
  • Bringing a second outfit if you would like more variety.
  • Wearing comfortable shoes for walking.

Comfort matters too. If you feel uncomfortable in what you are wearing, it often shows in the photographs. On the other hand, confidence always shines through.

Most importantly, do not overthink it. Your connection matters far more than your wardrobe.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING AN ENGAGEMENT SHOOT?

One of the biggest misconceptions about engagement shoots is that you will spend the entire session posing for photographs.

The reality is much more relaxed.

Most engagement shoots feel more like a walk together than a traditional photoshoot. We chat, explore the location and take things at an easy pace whilst creating opportunities for natural moments to unfold.

Of course, I provide guidance when needed. However, my approach is always relaxed and unobtrusive. Rather than focusing on complicated poses, I focus on helping you feel comfortable and connected.

The result is natural engagement photography that reflects your personality rather than forcing you into something that feels unnatural.

HOW LONG DOES AN ENGAGEMENT SHOOT TAKE?

Most engagement shoots last between one and two hours, which gives us plenty of time to enjoy the location without the session feeling rushed.

That relaxed pace is one of the reasons couples enjoy engagement shoots so much. There is no pressure to move quickly and no guests waiting for your attention.

Instead, we can take our time, enjoy the surroundings and create a wonderful variety of photographs along the way.

If we are visiting multiple locations or planning around sunset, we may allow a little extra time. However, the overall experience always remains relaxed and enjoyable.

ARE SUNSET ENGAGEMENT SHOOTS BETTER THAN DAYTIME ENGAGEMENT SHOOTS?

Photographers often talk about the golden hour, and for good reason. The hour before sunset produces soft, flattering light that can look absolutely beautiful in photographs.

There is certainly something magical about watching the light change as the sun begins to dip below the horizon. The warm tones and gentle glow create a wonderfully romantic atmosphere.

That said, daytime engagement shoots can be equally beautiful. They often feel:

  • Bright and fresh
  • Vibrant and energetic
  • Perfect for city locations
  • Ideal for parks and countryside settings

Rather than focusing solely on the light, I encourage couples to choose a time that suits their personalities and plans. After all, connection will always matter more than perfect weather or perfect lighting.

WHAT IF WE’VE NEVER HAD PROFESSIONAL PHOTOS TAKEN BEFORE?

If that sounds familiar, you are certainly not alone.

In fact, most of my couples have never had professional photographs taken before their engagement shoot. Almost every session begins with someone saying they feel awkward in front of the camera or do not know what to do with their hands.

Thankfully, those worries usually disappear very quickly.

My approach is not about creating stiff poses or asking you to perform. Instead, I focus on helping you relax, enjoy the experience and spend quality time together.

We will chat, explore the location and allow moments to happen naturally. Along the way, I provide gentle guidance whenever needed, so you never have to worry about what comes next.

Some of my favourite photographs happen between the planned moments:

  • A shared laugh
  • A spontaneous hug
  • A cheeky joke
  • A quiet glance
  • A windswept walk together

Those moments often tell a much bigger story than any carefully arranged pose.

By the end of the session, most couples tell me they enjoyed the experience far more than they expected. Many even describe it as feeling more like a date than a photoshoot.

That is exactly how it should feel.

WHAT PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT DOES AN ENGAGEMENT PHOTOGRAPHER USE?

Whilst couples often ask about camera equipment, the truth is that great engagement photography is about much more than the gear itself.

For engagement shoots, I use professional Canon camera systems, including:

This allows me to create everything from wide scenic images to natural storytelling photographs and beautifully flattering portraits.

However, equipment is only one part of the process.

The real magic comes from:

  • Understanding light
  • Choosing the right location
  • Recognising meaningful moments
  • Creating genuine connection
  • Helping couples feel completely at ease

That combination creates photographs that feel genuine, natural and full of life.

WHAT IS MY STYLE OF ENGAGEMENT PHOTOGRAPHY?

When couples first enquire, they often tell me they want photographs that feel natural.

They do not want stiff poses. They do not want forced smiles. Most importantly, they want photographs that genuinely reflect who they are.

That is exactly how I approach natural engagement photography.

I focus on connection, emotion and all the little moments that happen naturally when two people enjoy spending time together. Some of my favourite images come from the moments between the photographs couples expect.

Those moments often include:

  • A shared laugh
  • A quiet glance
  • A spontaneous hug
  • A windswept walk at sunset
  • Genuine moments of connection

Years from now, those are often the photographs that mean the most because they remind you exactly how that moment felt.

DO I NEED AN ENGAGEMENT SHOOT IF I’VE ALREADY BOOKED MY WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER?

You certainly do not need an engagement shoot in order to have wonderful wedding photographs.

However, many couples tell me afterwards that they are incredibly glad they chose to have one.

An engagement shoot removes uncertainty, builds confidence and gives you the opportunity to create beautiful memories before your wedding day even arrives.

It also offers something that can feel surprisingly rare during wedding planning. The chance to slow down, spend time together and celebrate your engagement without worrying about seating plans, timelines or to-do lists.

That alone makes it worthwhile.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT ENGAGEMENT SHOOTS

Planning an engagement shoot often comes with plenty of questions. Here are a few of the most common things couples ask before booking their session.

Are engagement shoots worth it?

I genuinely think so. Whilst the photographs are a wonderful keepsake, the biggest benefit is often the confidence you gain. An engagement shoot helps you feel comfortable in front of the camera, allows you to get to know your photographer and makes your wedding day feel much more relaxed.

Do engagement shoots help with wedding photos?

Absolutely. One of the biggest advantages of an engagement shoot is that it helps you understand what it feels like to be photographed professionally before your wedding day.

By the time your wedding arrives, you already know how your photographer works and what to expect. As a result, most couples feel far more confident and relaxed, which often leads to more natural wedding photographs.

What if we’re awkward in front of the camera?

You would be surprised how often I hear this.

The truth is that most couples feel exactly the same way before their engagement shoot. You do not need to know how to pose or have any experience being photographed.

My role is to guide you naturally, help you feel at ease and create an environment where you can simply enjoy spending time together. Within a few minutes, most couples forget about the camera altogether.

Can we bring our dog to an engagement shoot?

Of course!

For many couples, dogs are an important part of the family, so including them in your engagement shoot can make the photographs feel even more personal.

If you are thinking about bringing your dog along, we can choose a suitable location and plan the session around them to make sure everyone enjoys the experience.

How far in advance should we book an engagement shoot?

I usually recommend booking your engagement shoot between three and twelve months before your wedding.

This gives you plenty of time to enjoy the photographs and use them for save the date cards, wedding websites or other stationery if you wish.

What happens if it rains during our engagement shoot?

Living in the UK means we always need to keep an eye on the weather!

If the forecast looks particularly challenging, we can often reschedule to another date. However, a little cloud cover or light drizzle does not always mean the shoot needs to stop.

Some of the most atmospheric photographs happen on days when the weather is less predictable. The key is staying flexible and focusing on enjoying the experience together.
